SOME/ART : 'DOUBLE BIND & AROUND' EXHIBITION AT HANGAR BICOCCA
Figures turn above my head. Some of them are suspended within a confined space only apparently.
Double Bind & Around, the first solo exhibition in Italy dedicated to Juan Muñoz and curated by Vicente Todolí, speaks about movements. The artist, who died in 2001, was one of the leading exponents of European sculpture of the last two decades of the 20th century. On the occasion of the exhibition, HangarBicocca is showing his most important work, Double Bind, which was made in 2001 for the Turbine Hall at Tate Modern in London and never exhibited to the public afterwards. Walking over a thousand of shadows let us merging with the place. Everything seems frozen and vital at the same time, because there is no sound, no light, no distractions. Just a dazzling silence that draws the story of Muñoz.
Build a narrative involving the audience is what his work continues to do even today: are we watching or being watched? Who is the protagonist?
'There's a freedom in building each message' - said the curator - 'and this is the mystery that makes the exhibition significant'. 'The artist' - Todolí emphasizes - 'was extremely capable to plan his exhibitions as silent films. He thought that the viewer would have emitted the sound'.
Double Bind & Around will be available to visit until August 23rd at Hangar Bicocca in Milan
