HORST EGON KALINOWSKI EXHIBITION AT RICK OWENS LONDON FLAGSHIP STORE

RICK OWENS LONDON & RCM GALERIE ARE PLEASED TO PRESENT AN EXHIBITION OF SCULPTURES & RELIEFS BY THE GERMAN ARTIST HORST EGON KALINOWSKI CREATED FROM 1961 TO 2009.

KALINOWSKI'S WORK FIGURES IN IMPORTANT PRIVATE & PUBLIC COLLECTIONS AROUND THE WORLD, INCLUDING THE POMPIDOU CENTRE IN PARIS & MOMA IN NEW YORK.

THE LARGE PART OF KALINOWSKI'S ŒUVRE IS EXECUTED IN LEATHER, A COMPLEX MATERIAL TO WHICH THE ARTIST WAS ATTRACTED FOR THE RIGOR, AUSTERITY & EROTICISM IT AFFORDED HIS CREATIVE PROCESS. WITH ELEMENTS OF USED, PATINATED & AGED LEATHER HE CREATES ENGIGMATIC RELIEFS OVER WOOD BOXES. THESE ELEMENTAL OBJECTS, CALLED ‘CAISSONS’, EXUDE SACRED & PRIMAL FORCE.

THE ARTIST FORMS OTHER SCULPTURAL OBJECTS WITH LEATHER, INCLUDING TOTEMS, WHICH OFTEN REVEAL STRONG SEXUAL THEMES THAT ARE TREATED WITH ELEGANCE & FORCE. HE APPROPRIATES WOOD & METAL TO OTHER RELIEFS & SCULPTURES, ADDING THEM TO ELEMENTS OF AGED LEATHER TO CREATE UNIQUE JUXTAPOSITIONS. HORST EGON KALINOWSKI WAS BORN IN 1924 IN DUSSELDORF, GERMANY. HE STUDIED AT THE FINE ARTS ACADEMY OF DUSSELDORF. AFTER HE GRADUATED AT AGE 24, HE TRAVELED IN ITALY FOR A YEAR BEFORE MOVING TO PARIS IN 1950, WHERE HE ENROLLED AT THE ABSTRACT ART WORKSHOP AT THE GRAND CHAUMIÈRE ART SCHOOL IN THE ATELIER OF JEAN DEWASNE. KALINOWSKI FIRST EXPLORED RELIEF AFTER HE GLUED A BLACK CLOTH TO ONE OF HIS PAINTINGS IN 1955. OTHER OBJECTS, FROM SPONGES TO FEATHERS, FOUND THEIR WAY ON TO HIS CANVASES. FEARING HIS WORK WAS GROWING BAROQUE, KALINOWSKI TURNED TO LEATHER, THE MATERIAL THAT WOULD DEFINE HIS ŒUVRE & PROVIDE HIM THE AUSTERITY & MYSTERY HE DESIRED. IN 1972, HIS WORK WAS EXHIBITED IN THE GRAND PALAIS IN PARIS AS PART OF A SURVEY OF FRANCE'S MOST IMPORTANT CONTEMPORARY ART.
