VIDEO [FILMED BY IRIS DE TRUCKHEIM] FROM THE LAST EVENT AT SOME/THINGS SECRET, EARLIER THIS YEAR— THE OPENING NIGHT OF HER HEAD WAS FULL OF THE SOUND OF RAIN
Her Head Was Full Of The Sound Of Rain / an intimate installation exploring 4 issues of fashion photography by SOME/THINGS MAGAZINE & its collaborators; opened on sunday 23 January 2011, running until sunday 12 June 2011.
since some/things magaZine first edition, the publication has endeavoured to reinvent & recontextualise the way garments & editorials are photographed. through featuring artists as models, drawing inspiration from various texts & literature, having designers create exclusive pieces, & shooting in places uncommon to conventional fashion editorials, some/things maintains a uniquely personal & intimate approach to fashion photography.
the exhibition allows insight into the creation of the magaZine & the motivation behind its approach to fashion editorials, exhibiting never-before-seen images from the some/things archive; including WING SHYA’s previously unreleased stills from the set of director WONG KAR WAI’s iconic films in THE MOOD FOR LOVE & 2046 [featuring GONG LI, MAGGIE CHEUNG, TONY LEUNG]; & MATTHEW STONE’s behind-the-scenes photographs of the making of GARETH PUGH’s film, created in collaboration with filmmaker RUTH HOGBEN & SHOWSTUDIO; contemporary dance inspired editorial, exclusively modelled by OLIVIER THEYSKENS , photographed at THEATRE DE LA VILLE by MONIKA BIELSKYTE as well as intimate portraits of RICK OWENS & MICHELE LAMY, the result of a close collaboration between the pair & some/things throughout the 4 issues of the publication.
other works include HELMUT NEWTON’s muse VIOLETTA SANCHEZ photographed by TAKA MAYUMI; one of Japan’s most acclaimed butoh dancers, TAKETERU KUDO [of SANKAI JUKU], shot by MOTE SINABEL AOKI; iconic model HANNELORE KNUTS by JOHAN SANDBERG; plus works by ROBERT MONTGOMERY [associate publisher of daZed group], WAYNE LIU, & CHARLOTTE BALLESTEROS & HUBERT MAROT.
the preview night event provided an exclusive look at selected costumes from GARETH PUGH’s pitti uomo s/s11 collection, showcased as part of a live performance by CARSON MCCOLL & his band SULLOM VOE.
SOME/THINGS SECRET is a dynamic experimental space. rather than a conventional gallery, it acts as a physical extension of the magazine, exhibiting works featured within its pages as well as proJects & pieces commissioned exclusively for some/things. in addition, it serves as a creative environment, & the head office of some/things. it can also be made available to clients for use as a showroom or photographic studio.
