100-109 TACITA DEAN / BACKWARDS & FORWARDS IN TIME [WITH INTERVIEW BY RAINA LAMPKINS-FIELDER]

/ PRESENTATION WINDOWS [2005] WHITE ALABASTER

RAINA LAMPKINS-FIELDER / WITH REGARDS TO YOUR WORK, I CONSIDER YOU A SORT OF TIME TRAVELLER. FOR YOU, WHAT IS THE PAST, THE PRESENT, & THE FUTURE?

TACITA DEAN / THE PRESENT IS THE PRESENT, BUT I AM ATTRACTED TO THINGS THAT DON’T FUNCTION WELL IN IT; THAT DO NOT SIT COMFORTABLY IN THEIR OWN TIME. IN THIS WAY, I’M A LOVER OF ANACHRONISMS. BUT I AM GROUNDED & NO VISIONARY UNLIKE THE WRITER, J. G. BALLARD WHO TRAVELLED BOTH BACKWARDS & FORWARDS IN TIME, COLLECTING IMAGES & METAPHORS, IN ORDER TO MAKE BETTER SENSE OF OUR CURRENT TIME.

[..]

RL-F / WHAT, FROM YOUR PERSONAL HISTORY, HAS MARKED YOU THE MOST?

TD / AUTOBIOGRAPHY IS EVERYTHING IN THE MAKING OF A WORK OF ART, NO MATTER HOW YOU MIGHT WISH OTHERWISE. I’M GLAD FOR THE RICHNESS OF THE CHILDHOOD I HAD, ALBEIT A COMPLICATED ONE, & THE BEAUTY OF THE HOUSE IN WHICH I GREW UP. I AM GLAD I GREW UP IN AN ANALOGUE & UNMEDIATED WORLD, & IN RELATIVE ISOLATION. THESE THINGS CREATE WHO YOU ARE.

/ EXCERPT FROM A CONVERSATION BETWEEN RAINA LAMPKINS-FIELDER & TACITA DEAN.
